The article deals with the actual problem of choosing the ways of development of the university system of education in Ukraine. The study tested the formation of an innovative model of development with the support both for the achievements of the world university community and for the modern practices of the universities of Ukraine. The distinctive differences of traditional and innovative teaching are identified. Moreover, the potential benefits and drawbacks of using particular teaching methods in connection with the transition from one educative paradigm to another in the context of social demands and transformations are stated. As a result, the reasons of Ukrainian students’ ill-preparedness to fulfil the requirements of educational and scientific programs adapted to the world educational space are formulated. The peculiarities of preparing a free person of a new level of world outlook in the context of modern university education are outlined, for example, such as the formation of the university's critical-innovative potential and new human thinking in the conditions of university education. As a result, it is noted that the process of modernization of Ukrainian higher education in an era of shifting winds (instability) is characterized by ambiguity: on the one hand, the lack of a purposeful educational policy, on the other, the desire to change the concept of the educational process, to teach students "to think openly, think outside the box"; humanization of the educational process, its partial individualization. The benefits of this study are that it is proposed to combine in-depth study of academic concentration at Ukrainian universities with the study of specific courses for the formation of innovative thinking.uk_UA
