Abstract
Introduction. The specificity of applying the relevant rules and principles declared in IFRS implies the existence of alternatives in accounting and the use of professional judgments. However, standardization and regulation do not eliminate the influence of the human factor on accounting representation and financial reporting. Subjectivity itself may lead to distortions in accounting data and reporting indicators. This process-related outcome is largely explained by the influence of cognitive biases, which are the subject of economic psychology. The relevance of studying the relationship between the quality of financial reporting prepared in compliance with IFRS and cognitive biases increases along with the growing use of modern analytical methods and the expanding volume of information. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to determine the impact of cognitive biases on the quality of financial reporting under IFRS. Methodology. General scientific and special research methods were applied, allowing to reveal the characteristics of cognitive biases and their influence on IFRS reporting. In particular, critical analysis was used to identify the focus of scholars in studying the influence of cognitive biases in the financial sphere. Analysis, synthesis, and generalization were applied to fair value measurement and to building a corresponding scheme emphasizing the consideration of cognitive biases. Systematization was used in formulating the principles for preparing Notes to the financial statements. Empirical methods enabled examples of key objects of valuation to be provided and the specifics of their assessment in accordance with IFRS to be described. Comparative, statistical, and graphical methods allowed the role of auditing in ensuring the quality of financial reporting and overcoming irrationalities in its indicators to be characterized. Analogy and logical analysis facilitated the development of an algorithm for determining functional currency under IFRS guidance and identifying manifestations of subjectivity in this process. The structural-logical method justified the emergence of probabilistic estimates at different stages of accounting and allowed for the description of related cognitive biases. Results. The study proves the impact of cognitive biases on the preparation of financial reporting under IFRS. The main types of biases have been identified, and examples of their influence on accounting and reporting indicators have been provided. A scheme of fair value measurement has been developed, including four main blocks: input data; selection of valuation method; fair value hierarchy; and valuation process. The scheme incorporates alternative approaches, in particular market, cost, and income, along with their elements and characteristics. Examples of key valuation objects are presented, with justification of the sequence of valuation and its specifics. It has been substantiated that probabilistic estimates arise at different stages of accounting as well as during the audit of financial reporting. The study establishes that the main cognitive biases in IFRS reporting include distortion of fair value, incomplete or insufficiently transparent disclosure (especially in the Notes), overstatement or understatement of provisions and financial results, and the risk of reduced user confidence in reported data.
