Abstract
The author examines the process of establishment and development of the
Stanislaviv Theological Seminary from its foundation in 1907 upto 1914. He analyzes the
peculiarities of the Seminary students training in other European theological educational
institutions during World War I (1914 – 1918), characterizes the first steps of Bishop H.
Khomyshyn aimed at the restoration of the Theological Seminary in 1917-1918.
Creating a Theological Seminary in Stanislaviv was stipulated by the Pope’s Bull on
the establishment of the Stanislaviv Diocese in 1885. But to educate first future priests
the Stanislaviv bishops had to use theological institutions in Lviv, Vienna and Rome. Due
to the efforts of bishops Andrei Sheptytskyi and Hryhoriy Khomyshyn, Stanislaviv Theological Seminary was founded in 1907. The first rector of the Theological Seminary, Fr.
Jeremiah Lomnytsky formed the teaching staff and organized the educational and formational process aimed at preparing priests as missionaries. During World War I the students of the Stanislaviv Theological Seminary, which was closedby the Russian military
administration, temporarily continued studies at the theological seminary in Kromeryzh.
In autumn of 1917, Bishop H. Khomyshyn renewed the theological seminary with Fr.
Mychaylo Valnytskyi as a temporary rector.
