Abstract
Introduction. The derivatives market represents one of the key elements of the modern financial architecture, performing a strategic function of risk redistribution, shaping expectations regarding the future dynamics of underlying asset prices, and enhancing the liquidity of financial and commodity markets. Derivative financial instruments—futures, options, and swaps – constitute a substantial share of exchange-traded operations in developed economies and serve as indicators of the stability and maturity of national financial systems. Effective functioning of the derivatives market is impossible without a reliable clearing and settlement infrastructure that ensures timely fulfilment of contractual obligations, minimises counterparty default risks, and builds trust among market participants. Methodology. The study employs a combination of theoretical and analytical research methods. Theoretical generalisation was applied to systematise scientific approaches to the nature of clearing and settlement mechanisms in the derivatives market. Comparative analysis was used to contrast the international and Ukrainian experiences in the operation of central counterparties and clearing systems. The institutional–structural method allowed for the evaluation of the role of state and market institutions in shaping post-trading infrastructure, while the systems approach facilitated the identification of interrelations among regulatory, technological, and organisational elements of the Ukrainian clearing model. Results. The findings reveal that the main obstacle to the development of the derivatives market in Ukraine is the absence of a central counterparty (CCP), which limits the efficiency of clearing operations and increases counterparty risks. The market exhibits low liquidity and limited participation of institutional investors due to deficiencies in both technical and regulatory infrastructure. Comparative analysis of international practices (EU, USA, Japan) demonstrates that centralised clearing and margining systems are crucial tools for reducing systemic risks and ensuring market transparency. The study substantiates the necessity of harmonising national legislation with EMIR and MiFID II requirements, establishing a central counterparty, and digitalising settlement processes. Implementation of these measures is expected to enhance financial stability, increase investor confidence, and promote Ukraine’s integration into the European financial space.
